Built right within the Current Resident Studio, Hot Tea’s installation of red yarn created a perfect silhouette of Utica’s Finale dress, appearing as if Utica was being pulled in every direction. Hot Tea was chosen for his known works primarily made with yarn, aerosol-spray, and stencils consisting of non-destructive installations that mostly exist on the street. She is such an individual. She's unapologetically her, and that's freaking inspiring.” notes Johnson.īeginning the creative process, while Utica was busy building her starry look, Johnson was fast at work preparing her team. “Utica is such a role model for people who feel like they just don't fit the mold. Johnson was the perfect fit for this job due to her expansive work in offbeat worlds that broadcast the quirk and idiosyncrasies of people. After directing some award winning projects she joined forces with Current Resident in 2020. After her time in Los Angeles, CA she decided to come home and sink in her roots while expanding her skillset into the casting and directing fields. For the many hundreds of thousands of viewers this past winter, Utica gave Drag Race a kaleidoscopic twist as the season’s most fantastical look queen. Johnson found her love of film within the community of writing. With a beautiful silhouette and a heart at the centre of the piece, those were the elements I wanted to incorporate to embody the story of having your heart tethered to yourself and someone else.” adds Utica. “Once I heard the song Stayaway, recorded at Electric Lady Studios by Muna, I had this crystal clear image in my head of being dressed in the night sky. Johnson from Current Resident and local installation artist Eric Rieger, widely known as Hot Tea, were brought onboard to aid Utica in the making of her video. With the gown at the center of the performance, director L.J. With the gown came a request for a lip synced music video showing off the designed look to be broadcasted during the finale. Early life and education Mundt was born to Robert Duane and Susan Melinda Mundt in Olmsted County, Minnesota 1 and raised in Utica, Minnesota. Utica decided on a gown after hearing the song Stayaway by Muna. Utica Queen is the stage name of Ethan David Mundt (born June 2, 1995), a drag performer most known for competing on season 13 of RuPaul's Drag Race. Through her presence within the drag community she was asked to create the season finale look for RuPaul’s Drag Race 13th season. Ahead of next week’s grand finale, the queens of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 13 reunited (mostly virtually) on Friday to spill some tea, throw some shade and, most importantly, promote some. She was a contestant on season 13 of RuPaul’s Drag Race televised on VH1 and competed until she was eliminated after 12 episodes. I created Utica Queen as my own version of that.Utica Queen, also commonly known as simply Utica after her hometown in Minnesota, is the stage name of Ethan Mundt, a local drag queen within the twin cities. These pioneering women created little vignettes of humor and joy, and were quintessentially themselves. “I’ve always been inspired by old-style variety shows, and women of comedy like Lucille Ball and Carol Burnett. “I love to be out of the box, but as high-fashion as it can get,” Utica Queen tells Vogue. The 25-year-old is no doubt a true comedian who leans toward the theatrical and absurd (at times, the judges have critiqued that she's almost too oddball, such as when she wore a strawberry atop her head). Utica Queen, now based in Minneapolis, is kookier and campier than all of her competitors this season. However, among all the top-tier queens is one particular underdog who’s emerged as the unexpected breakout star-hailing from the small town of Utica, Minnesota. My favorite though is the follow up, because not only does RuPaul double down by giving Utica the middle finger she also does the blurred gesture again and proclaims it 'this is just the nastiest thing ever. The cast is not here to play with their fashion choices, and the runway challenges have been mind-blowing to watch thus far. I was Literally thinking about this just a moment ago. There’s Symone, the “ebony enchantress” who has slayed the runway with a miles-long do-rag, among other stellar looks. There’s Gottmik, the series’s first-ever trans man to compete, who comes armed with a serious fashion eye. Going into her time on the show, Utica Queen knew that RuPaul’s Drag Race was going to be a challenging experience. We’re now six episodes in, and season 13 has already served up some clear front-runners in the competition. Utica Queen Courtesy of RuPaul's Drag Race. The cast of RuPaul’s Drag Race is one of the show’s strongest yet.
